What is Kaante About?
Kaante is a movie that revolves around six men of Indian origin who are arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) for a crime they did not commit. They are detained and interrogated without any evidence, just because they fit the profile of the suspects. Feeling wronged and vengeful, they decide to team up and rob the bank that holds the funds for the LAPD. However, things go wrong when they realize that one of them is an undercover cop who has infiltrated their group. As they try to escape from the police and each other, they also discover secrets and betrayals that put their lives at risk.
The Plot of Kaante
The movie begins with a truck full of laptops being stolen in Los Angeles by Ajju (Sanjay Dutt), a trigger-happy gangster who works for a local crime lord. The LAPD arrests six men who were seen near the crime scene: Major (Amitabh Bachchan), a former army officer who has a terminally ill wife; Marc (Sunil Shetty), a bouncer who wants to rescue his girlfriend from a club owner; Bali (Mahesh Manjrekar), a drug dealer who has a stuttering problem; Mac (Lucky Ali), Bali's partner who is loyal to him; Andy (Kumar Gaurav), a computer expert who is divorced and has a son; and Ajju himself.
The six men are locked up in a cell together, where they bond over their common hatred for the police and their desire to get back at them. They hatch a plan to rob the American Services Bank, which is where the LAPD keeps its money. Ajju reveals that he stole the truck and offers to share the loot with them if they agree to join him in the heist. They all accept his proposal and start preparing for the robbery.
They scout the bank, get weapons and masks, and assign themselves code names based on Hindu gods: Major is Shiva, Marc is Vishnu, Bali is Brahma, Mac is Ganesh , Andy is Rama, and Ajju is Krishna. They also decide to use a warehouse as their rendezvous point after the heist.
On the day of the robbery, they enter the bank disguised as customers and employees. They take the staff and customers hostage and demand the manager to open the vault. However, they are unaware that one of them is actually a mole who works for the LAPD. The mole is none other than Major, who has been assigned to infiltrate the gang and stop the robbery. He secretly alerts his partner, Detective Jay (Sanjay Suri), who leads a team of SWAT officers to surround the bank.
As the robbers try to escape with the money, they encounter heavy gunfire from the police. They manage to reach their getaway car, but not before losing Mac, who is shot dead by Major. They drive to the warehouse, where they start suspecting each other of being the traitor. They also realize that they have been double-crossed by Ajju, who has taken most of the money and left them with only a fraction of it. They decide to track him down and get their share back.
Meanwhile, Ajju meets his boss, Baali (Malaika Arora Khan), who is also his lover. She reveals that she was behind the laptop theft and that she planned the whole robbery with Ajju. She also tells him that she has killed Major's wife and kidnapped his son, in order to blackmail him into working for them. She orders Ajju to kill Major and the others, or else she will kill his son.
Ajju agrees to do as she says, but he secretly contacts Major and tells him everything. He asks him to come alone to a hotel, where he will give him his son and the money. Major agrees, but he also informs Marc, Bali, and Andy about Ajju's location. They all head to the hotel, where they confront Ajju and Baali.
A shootout ensues, in which Baali is killed by Major, and Ajju is wounded by Marc. Major rescues his son and gives him to Jay, who arrives at the scene with backup. He then returns to the hotel room, where he finds Ajju dying. Ajju apologizes to him for his betrayal and asks him to forgive him. Major forgives him and shoots him in the head, ending his misery.
The movie ends with Major walking out of the hotel with a bag full of money, while Jay watches him from a distance. Jay decides not to arrest him, as he respects him for his loyalty and courage. He lets him go free, as a gesture of gratitude for saving his son.
